1. Safety: Your first priority is to keep her safe (whether it’s from your elbows or from the wild couple next to you).
2. Assertiveness: The lead should be comfortable yet consistently present and signals should be clearly distinguishable. Do not be afraid to lead!
3. Timing: Master the timing if you have not already done so. It is the only way to advance to an intermediate level or beyond.
4. Concepts: Understand and be able to verbalize all concepts. It is important that you are able to describe patterns verbally. Understand the Rules to Following above.
5. Leading Traveling Turns (chaines turns): Any CBL inside turn (the follow turns to her left) will be done on the 3rd beat. Outside traveling turns (the follow turns to her right) should be executed on the 2nd beat. From an open break traveling turns to her left can done on the 1st or 3rd beat. Analyze the mechanics of her weight transfer and understand why these rules are in place.
6. Hand Positions: Hand angles and positions are crucial to the communication between the lead and the follow. When taught a pattern, try to break down how the hand positions aid in execution and what they communicate.
7. Men’s Turning: As a general rule, you will be turning to the left on the 1st or the 3rd count, or to the right on the 5th or 7th count. A hook turn can be executed on the 2nd (hook on 2, turn on 3 on the left foot) or 5th (hook AND turn on your right foot) beat of the count.
8. Distance: Attempt to reduce distance between you and your partner. This is more efficient, provides time for execution and reduces bad habits.
