Leading: Spinning Footwork in Partnerwork

There are 5 basic spin patterns in partnerwork for guys. In order of most common or important.

1 - Spinning to the left most commonly happens on the left foot on 1 and 3. This is because on 1 and 3, you're stepping on your left foot. It all just works.

2 - Spinning to the right most commonly happens on the right foot on 5 and 7. This is because on 5 and 7, you're stepping on your right foot.

3 - Hook On 2 Spin: It's very common for guys to do a hook on 2 for a waiter turn or a in a CBL. The specific mechanics or this is that you hook on two with your right foot, generating power with the hook as you spin right on your left foot (this pivot would be your 3). Coming out of the spin you would land on 5,6,7 normally.

4 - Hook On 5 Spin: A less common hook step would be to hook on 5 with your right foot, but different from your hook on 2, the hook on 5, your pivot foot AND the foot that is generating the power is the right foot and it all happens on the 5th beat. You land 6,7 normally.

5 - Front Hook On 2: There are moments when you'll want to do a CBL but with the girl behind you. This is often done by stepping slightly to the side on 1, then with a hook in front (right foot comes in front of the left) on 2 and you pivot on your left foot on 3 and finish 5,6,7 normally.

6 - Even less common are in place traveling turns, but the following mechanics is basically a chaines turn in place. I usually do this step out of a basket, release the lady's hands (leaving her right at my torso, to be picked up on 1 after my spins). So on 123 you have a typical basket step, on 5 you plant a lot of your weight and bend the knee into the five (this is your prep), on 6 you release the potential energy and spin left on 6 for one rotation, switch feet, so that you're now spinning left on your right foot on 7, and end with a normal 123, or if you prefer you can do something fancier. The closer you keep your feet on 6 & 7, the easier it will get.

Make sure to always spot, keep tight abs, strength in the legs, head up, slight bend to the knees, straight back, don't open the arms and keep formal posture when you are working on these spins.
