Basic Rules To Following

1. Back-leading: Back-leading should never be done
2. Consistent weight transfer: The lady should always step on each number within a full count, with particular emphasis on completing her 5, 6, 7 consistently. This moment in the count is a time of rest for the follow to recover balance and prepare for the next signal. The 6th beat is of particular importance because it provides the potential energy that will be used by the lead in various ways.
3. Relax: In close partnerwork, the lady will attempt to keep her arms relaxed.
4. Connection: The lady should be prepared to cuff the tips of her fingers and quickly react to signals while staying connected. The lady should never initiate the breaking of the connection with her partner.
5. Tension: should be applied to the arm used to execute outside turns (away from the body) or when force is applied to an arm tangentially to the slot (e.g. a whip turn).
6. Momentum: The follow should try to continue momentum until a signal is given to stop.
7. Styling: Styling should not interfere with the lead. Following comes before styling.
8. Lightness is the ultimate goal. This is based on the ability to read signals, react quickly, engage the core, relax the upper body, use the non-lead side of the follows body to either pull across on inside turns, or punch through on outside turns.
